This interesting and undeniably modern take on The Little Mermaid tale is well told. Viewing the story (mostly) through the lens of Ana’s inner monologue is fascinating. The ways in which Wilburn chooses to modernize this story are impressive and well thought out. There is much about this story that twists the Disney version like a pretzel resulting in feelings of sympathy, joy and sorrow. The constant that flows through it all is love.
The last 26, (or so), paragraphs feel a bit rushed to get to the ending of the story. Still, this retelling is imaginative and fresh. It deserves 4 3/4 stars.
