This is a dark and interesting take on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. It challenges the notion of what it means to be awakened. It also incorporates several interesting concepts, some of which are not resolved. Most of the remaining questions surround this sleeping beauty’s family. Therefore, part of her backstory seems to have a couple of gaps in it.
The story’s strength lies in the imagination and outside the box thinking that produces such a fascinating twist. Strassel provides a completely fresh take on this classic tale, and this inventive retelling gets 4 1/4 stars.
