Threat is a very interesting novella because it reveals a delusion Jake Bishop has about himself. He mentions once that he doesn’t want to be like Max Devereaux. He doesn’t realize that he actually is like Devereaux. In Jake’s mind, he sees Devereaux as a greedy villain for whom no amount of money is ever enough. He doesn’t see the parallel in his own personality when it comes to vices.
Sydney is in love with Jake, at least with who she believes him to be. She is almost ready to set aside her own dreams just to be with him. She still continues to work and save, unable to abandon all her plans just yet. Her work ethic is something that Jake admires about her. Will she leave her job if she feels she can build a life with Jake?
This particular novella is full of suspense, intrigue, action, secrets and lies. Throwing Deveraux into the mix, in such a grand way, makes for a thrilling ending and a promise of more devious things to come. Very well done.
